Find and change text

Open Edit → Find/Change or press ⌘/Ctrl+F. Search the whole document, or choose Story to work within connected text frames. Story scope is available when a threaded story is selected; otherwise the dialog uses the document.

Replace carefully#

Type the text to find and, if needed, the replacement. Move through matches with the navigation controls. Replace changes the current match. Replace all changes every match in the selected scope, so review a few results first when the term is common.

Use Text mode for ordinary words and phrases. GREP mode accepts a regular expression when you need a pattern, such as a repeated prefix or a number format. A malformed pattern cannot be run; fix it before replacing. In Text mode, use the matching options to narrow results when case or whole words matter.

The dialog can also apply a character or paragraph style to matches. This is useful for marking repeated terms without rewriting them. Pick no change for style fields you want to leave alone, or clear when you want to remove a matching style. Make a version snapshot before a large replacement so you can restore the earlier copy if the result is not what you intended.
