Plans and limits for connected AI apps

What a connected AI app (Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client) can do on each Popcorn plan, the daily preview limit, and what the limit messages mean.

2 min read Updated

Connecting an AI app to Popcorn Editor works on every plan, the Free plan included. The app works inside the same account as you, so the limits of your plan apply to what it does too. This page explains those limits and the messages an AI app passes on when it reaches one.

What every plan includes

  • Connecting Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client, with OAuth sign-in or an agent token.
  • Every tool: browsing templates, creating, reading and editing designs, validation and the layout report, previews, images and long text.
  • No Popcorn AI credits are used. The AI app brings its own model. Popcorn only checks and builds the documents it sends.

Daily preview limit

Every design an AI app writes normally comes back with a small preview image, and render-design draws pages on request, so the app can see what it made. On accounts without a paid subscription, previews are limited per day (30 by default). Paid plans have no daily preview limit.

When the limit is reached:

  • Writes still work. The design is created or updated as usual. The app receives preview: "skipped: daily preview limit reached, open editor_url to see the design" instead of an image.
  • render-design returns a message saying the daily preview limit is reached, with the link to open the design in the editor.
  • The layout report (analyze-design) and validation keep working, so the app can still catch overflowing text, collisions and low contrast without a picture.

A preview that fails to draw (for example while the renderer restarts) does not count. The limit resets at midnight UTC.

Limits that come from your plan

These apply whether you edit by hand or through an AI app:

Limit What the AI app tells you
Number of designs in a workspace Your plan allows a set number of designs. Delete one or change plan in your account.
File storage in a workspace The workspace has used the storage its plan allows. Delete unused images or change plan.
Templates not included in your plan The template is marked locked and can be listed, but not opened or used.

Exports (PNG, PDF and the rest) happen in the editor, not through the AI app, so the export allowance of your plan is not used by the app.

If your plan does not include AI apps

If a plan ever comes without access for AI apps, the app still connects and shows Popcorn's tools, and each tool answers that your plan does not include connecting AI apps, with a link to this page. Nothing in your account changes.

Where to see your plan

Your plan is shown in the app: open the user menu (your avatar), choose My Workspace, and look at the Plan & billing card at the top.

See Plans & AI credits for how plans and credits work in general.
